Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder

I’ve have been using both this version of the Flip Video Camcorder and the older version and find both cameras to be easy to use, high quality and tremendous value for sub $200.

With a single push of a button the camera is powered up and ready to go. I can take short videos and long videos. It’s especially good for taking shots of my little 5 month old son and easily uploading them online for friends and family toFlip Video Ultra Series Camcorder, 30-Minutes (White) see. Plus it’s virtually indestructible – I’ve dropped it many times and it works just fine.

The software is easy to use and I love that it doesn’t need to install on my computer. I hate having to insert a disk and deal with having another lame application taking up space on my computer. Everything runs off of the camera and runs fast!

I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a simple, reliable, sturdy camcorder. Especially if you plan on uploading videos to the web.

Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch

Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Sapphire Blue Netbook - 6 Cell Battery

Here’s why I bought this little gem: I’m a writer/editor/publisher, and my office machine is an HP 17-inch laptop with

all the bells and whistles.

But sometimes I get cabin fever and like to drive out to a scenic spot to work outdoors in fresh air and su

nshine. An over 9-pound laptop hooked up to four USBs like a patient on life support is just too klutzy for that. I also travel on business occasionally.

I don’t miss the lack of a CD drive. In just a few minutes, I transferred my data files using mostly a large-capacity thumb drive. If I need to load program files from a CD, I have an external CD drive.

Pros:

1. Light as a feather.
2. Surprisingly fast.
3. Beautiful, bright, high-res display. Easy on my “old guy” eyes. And if needed, I can output the VGA to my 22-inch flat-panel monitor at the office, if desired.
4. I too lucked out with the longer-lasting battery. This puppy goes all day without a sweat.
5. I’m still amazed that for Amazon’s low price, I can basically clone off everything I need from my larger machine and travel anywhere by air, car, rail, or horseback and still get work done (though I really have to focus while on that darn horse)!
6. Both wireless and Ethernet connections work like a charm.

Cons:

1. Yup. Case collects dust and fingerprints better than a team of CSIs. But it cleans off easy enough.

2. Maybe it was just my unit, but I had a dickens of a time getting the battery to snap into place, even with the little slides pulled aside as instructed.
3. Not really a con, but some here have belly-ached about the small keyboard and tricky touchpad. I already had a great Logitech cordless mouse/keyboard combo, so I just ordered an extra receiver, slipped it into a

n empty USB slot, and was all set. I have a large-enough rolling laptop case (for the big laptop), that I can slide the Acer netbook, mouse, and keyboard inside any time I need to travel.
My first computer was a Commodore VIC-20, back in 1982 or so. I shake my head now when I look at this little Acer and realize the power and capacity crammed into such a small space.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook (1.66 GHz Intel Atom N280 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB Eee Storage, Bluetooth, XP Home, 9.5 Hour Battery Life) Black

I have had the Eee PC 1000HE for about a week now, and it has fulfilled my every expectation. Because I hadn’t started up the Eee without installing the 2 GB RAM I’d purchased, this review is relevant to those who plan to upgrade, or have already upgraded the RAM in the unit. For those who don’t, I will add that it is extremely easy and inexpensive to double the RAM of this netbook. I had never opened a laptop chassis before, and it took all of 5 minutes.

Pros:
*Up front, the package is inexpensive. You definitely get the bang for your buck
*Bright, brilliant screen with an excellent viewing angle.
*Large, more comfortable keyboard; touch typing is incredibly easy to get used to.
*Long battery life; I’ve had mine unplugged for over seven hours without a recharge.
*Exactly the amount of power and speed that I need from a computer, I’m able to run some of my favorite games (GTA: San Andreas, UT2004, and Neverwinter Nights) without breaking a sweat, edit photos and stream videos through the wireless card.
*The power-saving hotkeys are really useful. Most of the time I don’t notice the difference between ‘Power-Saving’ mode and ‘Super Performace’ mode, which means for normal usage I’m saving a lot of battery life.

Cons:

*The volume is a bit too low on the speakers, AND when I’m wearing headphones. I’ve opened up all of the volume adjusters at one point or another, and I can’t increase the volume past a certain point. I could imagine this being very irritating on a long bus ride or a plane ride.
*As really helpful the multi-touch pad is (and it truly is helpful), some of the presets are too closely linked to “scroll up and down”. For example, I find myself opening a ‘magnifying glass’ one moment, and ‘zooming out’ of a webpage the next. I couldn’t figure out why all my webpages were tiny. So disabling most of the multi-touch functions is probably a smart idea when you get started.
*This is just a quibble, but the resolution of 1024 x 600 is so specific to a very small number of machines.

Overall, the Eee PC 1000HE is something I will be using consistently. It is exactly what I need.
