What is the Best Laptop

The correct term should be what is the best laptop for the needs of the user, as there is a whole multitude of laptop makes – models with different specifications there really is no best laptop. To find the laptop that’s right for you we first need to ascertain the basics that just about every laptop should have – Wired and wireless networking capabilities – at least 2gb of ram and the hard drive should be a minimum of 80gb as just about every later version of operating systems, applications and games are larger than previous versions requiring more disk space, and today a 40gb hard drive is simply not large enough.

What else needs to be considered? Size / Portability – Processor or CPU – Operating system – Graphics – USB Ports – CD/DVD drive – Screen Size – Aesthetics – Laptop Role – Saving Money.

Size / Portability – the most common laptop screen sizes are between 13-15 inches, due to this it generally means the lowest prices, which is great if you are out to save some money, but if you travel around a lot then a heavy laptop could work out to be more in Osteopath fees than the total cost of the laptop, so if you travel a lot a small laptop is a real blessing, after all even if the laptop itself is not too heavy, by the time we add the mains adapter, a padded case, plus anything else you need to carry, it can start to get pretty heavy specially if carried around for a while. The same cannot really be said for 17” laptops, if your looking for something with a larger screen that is fine, but if you need to travel at all why not invest in a small laptop and put the extra money towards getting a 19” external screen which is bigger and can also be used in conjunction with the laptop screen, in effect giving two screens.

Processor or CPU – Processors have changed a lot over the past few years and now it seems many companies appear to be bolting on more and more processor cores. So at present a laptop needs to have a dual core processor or above. Dual core is the present standard with Intel’s Core 2 Duo and AMD’s Turion 64 x2, both are very good processors, but my personal opinion is AMD has the edge due to its cheaper price. If you don’t mind waiting and have the money, checkout some of the Quad core laptops coming onto the market.

The Operating system – If you want a laptop with Windows XP and you have found you can only purchase with Windows Vista (which is more common now) do not just presume that you can simply wipe away Vista and replace with XP, a lot of new pc hardware may not have XP drivers developed for it, this can create real headaches when trying to change over to XP.

Graphics Cards – it is generally not possible to replace or upgrade the video capabilities on a laptop computer, usually whatever video card is installed thats what your laptops stuck with, If you are into gaming or need other high end graphic performance the laptop will need a graphics card with dedicated memory, otherwise graphic performance of your application will suffer if it involves in depth graphics or high end gaming.

USB ports – You can never have enough, the average amount of USB ports on a laptop is 4 this may sound like plenty, but once you plug in peripherals such as a keyboard –printer– mouse – pen drive it wont seem so many, of course you could always purchase an external hub, as they are very cheap, but best option is to buy a laptop with more ports in the first place. Another point worth checking; Every laptop should have USB type 2 ports, but its worth checking this to confirm as USB 1 is around 10 times slower.

DVD & CD drive – A lot of the information given in regards to CD/DVD drives can be a little confusing terms such as Single and Dual layer – CD/RW DVD/Rom. Just about all new laptops now should have a Dual layer DVD writer drive this will do just about everything such as reading and writing to CD’s and DVD’s and reading and playing them too.

Screen size – this really covers the portability of the laptop again, the bigger the screen the heavier its going to be, there are also some nice screen technologies around such as tru brite which give the screen a glossy brighter look.

Aesthetics – what would you prefer a slow laptop that looks superb or a faster machine that looks like a brick? When looking for a laptop there is a wide choice available so you should not have to compromise on either, but as a general rule if you have to, compromise on the looks a little but not on the spec.

Laptop role – what will the laptop be used for, general Internet browsing – word documents, pretty much any laptop could do this standing on its head, so the world of laptops is your Oyster. Business applications – large spreadsheets etc, then mid power will be fine, do not need to worry too much about the graphic abilities and a shared memory type should be fine. Gaming or high end graphics require the most powerful processors and graphics cards, be prepared to dig deep if you want to play the latest games with all the extra effects switched on.

Saving Money – If you want a good laptop for a cheaper price you have a number of choices, the first of these is a second user computer, you can save a lot of money this way, but you need to know what your looking at or you could purchase a problem machine or one that is not all what it seems, plus unless it still has warranty left you simply take the risk.
Refurbished computers can offer good value for money, plus you get a warranty too.
Bargain basements – many large computer stores frequently have special offers which can be great value, check on websites for models that have been replaced by a newer model there are some good bargains to be had this way, but be quick as they sell very quickly. checkout more of our other articles at www.computer-adviser.com

Where to Buy a Cheap Power User Laptop

You want a cool high powered laptop don’t you? A slick, quick, slimline, cool, powerful as a train laptop that lets you go online anywhere you like. If only there wasn’t that annoying little price problem! Cool hi-power laptops are pricey, much more so that desktop PCs of the same power. Not a problem if you’ve got money or a generous boss, but if not is it still possible to get yourself a slick cool powerful laptop cheap? The answer, happily is yes you can and in this article I’m going to tell you how. Lets go!

With mobile wireless internet everywhere laptops have come of age. The days of them being pricey lumpy mobile word processors and a salesperson’s PowerPoint presentation box are gone forever. You can do all the stuff you do on your big desktop PC pretty much anytime anywhere. Add this to the fact that they are faster and more reliable that desktop PCs, can be hooked up to large screens, full size keyboards and USB hubs then they become a very real desktop replacement as well as mobile powerhouses.

**So how do you go about getting a power user level Laptop at half price?**

1) Buy slightly older technology

Rapid advance in technology makes it meaningless to buy the latest technology at a high price unless you’ve got more money than sense. For example, when laptops with wireless capability first came to the market they cost upto US$2500. Now just about all laptops have this.

2) Buy used or refurbished laptop

The depreciation of a laptop value is so high, that after one year in the market, a laptop can easily lose half its value. So last years top of the range power gamer laptop is now half the price. And despite technology changes 1 year is not very long even so and that 1 year old is a serious powerhouse.

So if you’re looking for a cheap laptop, look for one which is close to one year old. The main area to take care on is condition. By their nature laptops can get knocked about.

**But where to find this type of Laptop in best condition?**

Simple. You buy gamers or business power users. Buying any electronic gadgets including laptops from hard core power users or gamers is a great strategy. Why’s that?

Gamers or power users fall into the “more money than sense” or “company buys it for them” groups. They either want or need the latest and most powerful technology to run their games or power hungry applications and they don’t settle for second best. Gamers take real good care of their laptops and company users are backed up by pro IT people.

Gamers also demand the latest technology. So after one year, they will be bored of what they have and will look to sell off their laptops so that they can buy a new one.

So where to find these great people who will sell you a laptop that’s brilliant for everything apart from the high end physics?

**Friends**

If you have friends who are gamers, ask them if or when they are planning to sell off their laptop. Who knows, maybe you can get your good and cheap laptop from them. A source you can trust very much as well.

**Gamer Hang Outs**

Scan through gaming forums and local gaming community online or in gamer cafe notice boards.

If you don’t have gamer friends then scanning through gaming forums online is another way to get good and cheap deals for used laptop. Or look on eBay but make a rule only consider sellers in your own country with good feedback and a solid returns and support policy.

**Where to find gamer forums?**

Google search for gaming forums. Start basic “gaming chat forum” and if no luck find out what the very latest games are and look for forums to do with the game title.

Visit each one and check to see if they have a for sale Section. There you’ll definitely find many post from gamers looking to sell their gaming laptops.

**Local bulletin boards and classifieds**

Do scan through local bulletin boards near you for cheap deals on laptop. Craigslist.org is also well worth a look as it is by nature local.

Local boards are especially good if there are software companies around the area. They often sell their used computers or laptops for sale when their projects end.

**What to look for**

Look for cheap laptop with at least 1gb memory – This is especially important for used laptop. If the processor speed is slow, then having more memory can compensate for the lack in speed. In fact, the size of memory plays a big part in determining how fast a laptop runs an application and just by increasing the memory size, you’ll get a huge boost in speed.

A cheap laptop with at least 1gb memory will also run most non graphic intensive application easily and will run graphics fine as long as the graphics card is reasonable.

**Important. Make sure it’s from a mainline manufacturer**

Very important because if you are buying used laptop, then the chances of requiring servicing is higher than a new laptop. So if you buy from a reputable manufacturer, you will save a lot of trouble and time if your laptop do require servicing. It may well be that there is no warranty but at least, just like with a car, there will be many places you can get it looked at.

I hope this has been helpful and that you can now see that getting a good laptop need not be a wallet buster and that it is possible to get a cheap power user laptop. Just think gamers!

Using Compare Laptops tool to select a laptop that meets all your needs

Buying a laptop is not a guessing game and with so many laptops in the market. Most often, it becomes very difficult for you to make up your mind on what to buy. Every laptop manufacturer today has at least a minimum of 10-25 notebook models to offer, and even if you have the basic idea of what you want, it becomes hard to narrow down to your perfect choice.

Today laptops are not just machines that provide mobile computing. Rather they have evolved into tools of digital lifestyle. Today a laptop is used for computing, entertainment, mobile internet, video conferencing, gaming and much more. But not all laptops have all the functionalities, and each functionality adds to the cost. So how should you systematically go about selecting a laptop that meets your needs and comes at the affordable price?

One feature that is effectively used by comparison websites is Compare Laptop tool. This tool allows you to compare various models on price and features across brands and also different models of the same brand. The common mistake committed by most of the first time buyers of laptop is that they tend to compare only prices of laptops without looking at the features and configuration of the laptops, and therefore buying decision reached is never right.  It is like comparing Maruti 800 with Mercedes Benz C220, and if price is the only consideration then nobody would ever buy Mercedes Benz C220. Compare Laptop tool not only allows you to compare prices of different laptops , but it offers comparison based on features and specifications like Processor, Ram, Hard Drive, Optical Disc Drive and so on. Basically Compare Laptop tool allows you to do like- to- like comparison to arrive at the right buying decision.

A simple three step process will help you select right laptop or any other technology gadget:

Decide what you need laptop for.  For instance, do you need it for basic computing, or running high end applications, or graphic work, or gaming or entertainment? For example a HP pavilion laptop offers more multimedia capabilities when compared to a Dell Studio laptop, but at the same time a Dell Studio is much more suited for heavy computing as compared to HP pavilion notebooks.
After you’ve decided on the use, shortlist models using Compare Laptop tool that meet your criteria with respect to features, components and overall specifications.
Finally compare price of shortlisted models and further narrow down your choice to one to three models that are lowest priced.

Having said that, comparison tool as used in most the comparison websites today has its own limitations and it becomes difficult to narrow down your choices beyond a point.  www.consumermate.com takes this concept a step further and tries to address some of these anomalies. Consumermate allows you to shortlist models based on brand, screen-size, weight, and price before you do comparison on components & features. This allows you to specify your basic requirements before you go to detailed specification sheet. The buying decision is much more simple, accurate and precise this way.

Besides, Consumermate has a user friendly feature of Laptop Guru that through set of simple questions guides a lay-man to ascertain his exact requirements and select appropriate models. This is a very handy tool if you are unable to define your requirements, which is the case most often. In addition, Consumermate has features like Expert Ratings & reviews and user reviews that help you further refine your search.

The whole idea behind comparison tool is to provide choice and transparency to the prospective buyers and thus helping them reach objective and correct buying decision.

Laptop and Notebook Buying Guide

A laptop is the ideal replacement for your desktop computer. The greatest advantage of a laptop is its portability. Unlike desktop computers, you can easily move a laptop around your home, carry it to work or class and take it with you when you travel. Laptops are a big investment, so before buying one, you should consider many factors like the manufacturer, performance and features.

What kind of laptop user are you?

A home user wants all the features of a desktop PC in the form of a notebook. If you are a home user, then choose a notebook which is easy to carry and comes with the most basic computer applications. Students should opt for an affordable laptop which is light and durable. Frequent fliers need slim notebook models with long-lasting batteries. A business user should purchase a laptop with plenty of hard disk space and advanced security features while a gamer needs a fast processor and the latest graphics card.

What are the different kinds of laptop computers available?

Laptops for Entertainment:

Multimedia laptops are always more expensive and heavier than your standard model. These laptops come with a powerful processor, abundant memory and a large hard drive. You can use these laptops as a mobile DVD player, MP3 jukebox and a digital photo album. If you buy a TV tuner card, you can even use your multimedia notebook as a television set. These notebooks are ideal for PC gaming.

Laptops for Business:

Laptops especially designed for business use are ultra portable. These laptops are durable and more secure than the basic laptop. They are best suited for consumers who are always on the move. A good business laptop should offer a fingerprint reader or SmartCard support to prevent data theft. These notebooks usually have advanced computer applications and wireless capabilities, so you can work even when you are away from your desk.

Laptops for Home:

The home user typically uses a laptop for checking mail and browsing the web. These laptops perform general tasks. A high speed processor is an unnecessary luxury and tends to be wasted on most home users. Opt for a notebook with at least a 14-inch screen and a comfortable keyboard. These laptops are generally heavy, weighing more than 4 kg at times. Their average battery life is less than three hours.

What constitutes a good laptop?

Ergonomics:

If you are going to use your laptop extensively, then you need to be comfortable with the keys. Try a laptop with slightly larger keys to avoid straining your fingers from typing. Most laptops come with a touch pad or a tracking pointer instead of a mouse. If you are a PC gamer, buy a separate mouse which can keep up with the fast-paced action on screen.

Operating Systems:

The Windows XP Media Center Edition is a good operating system for entertainment laptops. It makes optimal use of multimedia features like TV tuners, radio tuners and media players. If you are a professional who prefers Apple notebooks but are concerned about compatibility, check out the dual boot models by Apple that allow you to install and run Windows as well as Mac OS X. If you prefer PCs, Microsoft Vista is an ideal alternative to Windows XP. Vista comes in several editions, including Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium for the home user, Vista Business for the professional and Vista Ultimate for the best of both worlds.

Memory and Storage:

All data and applications are stored in the RAM (random access memory). Many laptops commonly use 256 MB of RAM. Most business laptops and entertainment laptops come with 512 MB or more of RAM. The more RAM you buy, the more data you can store.

The hard drive stores all programs and files. For the average home user, a 20 GB hard drive will more than suffice. If you buy a laptop for entertainment or business purposes, a 60 GB hard drive will better serve your needs. Some entertainment laptops even have multiple hard drives for better performance. Hard drives come with different speeds. Most laptop hard drives have a speed of 5,400 rpm. However, faster hard drives go up to 7,200 rpm.

Display:

The size of a laptop is based on the size of the screen. Screen size starts as small as 10.6 inches and goes up to 20 inches diagonally. Most laptops have an LCD monitor. However, if you are using your laptop for CAD, a CRT monitor will serve you just as well, if not better. The screen resolution determines the crispness of your image. A 12.1 inch display uses WXGA resolutions (1,280 by 800). A 14 or 15 inch display typically uses WSXGA+ (1680 by 1,050), although a small number of notebook computers use WUXGA (1,920 by 1,200) instead.

Processor:

It is more difficult to upgrade a notebooks processor than it is to upgrade a desktop computer. For this reason, you should buy a processor with a speed that will best suit your use. Also, it is wise to choose a processor with less battery consumption. Processors with 1.4 to 1.6 Ghz are preferred by most users.

Battery:

Lithium ion batteries are commonly used in laptops. The average battery life is about 3 hours. It takes around 75 minutes to fully recharge a lithium ion battery.

Graphics Card:

A graphics card, sometimes referred to as a video adapter, is responsible for generating the images you see on a laptops display. For businessmen who need to do lot of presentations, a graphics card containing 32 or 64 MB of dedicated memory is the right choice. There are also specially designed cards for gaming. These cards are expensive and should be avoided unless you require excellent graphics.

USB Ports:

Laptop computers come with at least one USB port so that you can connect peripherals to the notebook. Recent models have a FireWire connection that lets you transfer digital information from camcorders or MP3 players.

Optical Drives:

Most laptops come with either a CD-ROM (compact disc, read-only memory), a CD-RW (compact disc, re-writeable) or a DVD-ROM (digital versatile disc, read-only-memory). The DVD+RW/+R with CD-RW is a combination drive which will read a CD or a DVD and write data to a DVD as well.

Modem:

Laptops are available with integrated modems for dial-up connections, Ethernet ports for cable internet and DSL and wireless modems for Wi-Fi connections. Many business laptops also have a cellular wireless modem so you can browse at broadband speeds with just a mobile phone signal.

Which Is The Most Feasible Laptop In The Market Today?

Laptops are becoming as common as cell phones and there are so many brands on the market today. Trying to select the most feasible laptop really depends on personal choice and usage. If we look at the laptops on the market each extols their features.

However most have the same features in common. Processors, chipsets, size of hard disk drives, DVD players, wireless interface are found on all the laptops. Of course all the other standard features are also there. Like network ports, USB ports, serial port, etc.

Right now it’s the Intel Duo core processors that have taken the market by storm. But there are multiple features that a user wants from their laptop. Some want to use their laptop for gaming so want high speed processors. Others want to listen to music while they are working and want high quality speakers. Still others require high quality graphics. Students want laptops that are lightweight as they have to be carried all over the campus. Elderly people also want lightweight computers. Some people want widescreen laptops.

The individual requirements for laptops are so diverse that one single laptop cannot fulfill all the needs. Laptop manufacturers are busy in trying to add more features and make their laptops more versatile. Here it is not only the American laptop makers that are in stiff competition. There are laptop manufacturers world wide. All are trying to gain a sizeable niche in the world of laptops.

So when you are in the market for a laptop, first access your requirements. Is the weight of the laptop a consideration for you? Should the laptop be so tough that it can withstand falls or weights falling on them? What is the absolute essential size of hard disk you require? How fast should the processor speed be? How much battery time you require? After you have decided on what you are looking for then do a search for a suitable laptop.

Price will also be a major consideration and you want your laptop to work for a long time. Also the type of warranties that are offered by laptop makers has to be taken into account. Some people want international warranties as they do a lot of traveling. You may change your cell phone after every couple of months but not your laptop. Your laptop is going to be around for a long time.

Laptops have become the life support systems for a number of people globally. Journalists, business executives, students, and many other people have now become totally dependent on their laptops. So buying a feasible laptop is a big decision. What you want is a laptop that suits your needs, gives you the battery time you want and is not a burden to carry around.

Finding a suitable and feasible laptop is not difficult once you know what you need. Do some research; look at reviews on the different brands and models available. This little homework will help to narrow down your choices. Then you should be able to find a suitable laptop that will meet your current and future requirements.

Pimped-Out Gaming Laptops! Powerful Gaming Laptops Built Your Way

In our fast paced and technology savvy society we only want the best when it comes to the top gaming experience. The latest in the highest performance gaming experience however comes from a source you probably won’t be expecting…

In general the most serious of gamers are considered to be a very demanding group of people. They know their computers inside out and they know what they want from them but did you know that many of these serious gamers are opting for laptops over desktops?

Things have really changed in the world of laptops. There have been some major developments in not only the way that laptops are constructed but also the technology that is placed in them. Quad processors are now available in gaming laptops but what really has broken the gaming barrier is the introduction of SLI technology which makes hooking up two or more Graphics Cards or GPUs possible within laptops. Throw in much more RAM at higher speeds and you have the formula for higher performance gaming in a smaller package.

This new technology has now made the laptop nearly or as powerful as your desktop PC; so it’s no wonder that more and more gamers are switching from their desktop PC in favor of a laptop. These laptops aren’t just any laptops however; they are specifically built, pimped out if you like, to be able to run and play games better than your standard laptop or desktop computer.

Gaming laptops are the elite; they are the top of the line laptops for all of your gaming needs. The reason for this is that these laptops are built to perfection and not only that, they can also be built and tailor made to fulfil everything that you need to have the ultimate machine when it comes to your gaming laptop.

Custom building a laptop to meet a certain specification is what many gamers are now choosing over buying a standard laptop that simply meets the requirements needed; these gamers want to take it a step further. They want to, in essence, produce their own blueprints for what will be the best gaming machine on the market.

If you’re ordering a gaming laptop from some of the gaming specialist like Alienware, Rock in the UK, or even a local HP or Dell XPS rig; and you can config or order the amount of RAM, type of Processors and most importantly, the type of GPU or Graphics Card you want in your gaming laptop. Obviously, the more cash you’re willing to spend, the more ‘pinped-out’ your gaming laptop will be.

It has only been in recent times that laptops have shown what potential they have to be the best of the best in the computer world. They are powerful mobile machines that are made to feature vital components to make the laptop the fastest, sharpest and brightest it can be; it makes a laptop the perfect gaming machine.

Whatever your gaming habits are you are able to pimp out a laptop to make a gaming monster to rival others. You can design your own gaming system and then have it custom built by experts. When you design your gaming laptop there are certain considerations that I’m sure you are already aware of, that you will need to include in your gaming laptop to make it the best it can be.

You will be looking at getting the fastest processor, largest amount of RAM and best resolution. Not just any laptop will do for a gamer; you need what is essentially considered to be a powerhouse that can handle the intense graphics of some of the best 3D games that are on the market today. So you need to keep in mind the fact that you are unable to upgrade the graphics card in many laptops so when you are custom building your ultimate gaming laptop it is highly important that you buy a laptop with the fastest graphics card that you can; the latest DirectX graphics cards are highly recommended. Most gamers go with high-end NVIDIA or ATI GPUs which usually gives them the best performance.

If you are a gamer who is looking into what makes up the best gaming laptop I suggest that you take it one step further like many people already have done, and get your gaming laptop custom built. This way you get the best of all worlds. You get a fast processor, high quality graphics card and a large amount of RAM.

Custom building laptops is what you need if you want the best from your gaming laptop. So get your gaming laptop specs figured out now and get them sent out to the laptop manufacturers. Ordering your custom gaming rig online is easy and fast to do and you will be gaming with the best of them in no time!
